Bayer HealthCare opens its API development and manufacturing
capabilities to external customers
Wuppertal – Bayer HealthCare AG, a subgroup of Bayer AG with over 34,000 employees and 8.9 billion € sales in 2003, is known as one of the world’s leading innovative companies in the health care industry. In the Pharma- and Chemical Park in Wuppertal, Bayer HealthCare (BHC) has assembled its key biotechnology and chemical development functions along with cGMP manufacturing facilities for pharmaceuticals.
At the CPhI 2004, the company announces its decision to expand its contract
development/manufacturing activities in Wuppertal/Germany. One primary focus
are chemical development services, where BHC offers an integrated package
of process R&D, analytical development, regulatory affairs and consulting
modules to suit the individual customer’s requirements.
According to Dr. Rolf Angerbauer, BHC’s head of chemical development,
“Companies with chemical development needs will profit from a partnership
with Bayer HealthCare in a number of ways: They can tap into our long-standing
experience in the successful development of drug candidates from preclinical
to market. Our well-proven development strategy will enable our customers
to rapidly enter clinical trials. They can rely on the quality of the product
we deliver and the high level of dedication of our skilled personnel. After
all, pharma is our business.”
Facilities include a modern pilot plant with seven independent compartments
designed specifically for the scale-up and Small-Scale GMP manufacturing of
APIs. Its high level of containment and cleanliness classes make this facility
particularly suitable for the production of Highly Actives and Injectibles.
Chemical and biological products with registered manufacturing processes requiring
larger volumes up to 8 m3 and 80 m3, respectively, can be produced to Bayer
quality standards in plants of BHC’s API production unit. The site is
FDA-approved, inspected by customers and local authorities and meets the requirements
of ISO 14001. A wide variety of established and innovative technologies is
available.
Optimally complementing the contract services for small molecules, the biotechnology
capabilities of Bayer HealthCare’s multi-purpose pilot/production plants
span from fermentation and biotransformations to the purification of biomolecules
such as recombinant proteins, secondary metabolites and biocatalysts. The
plant is registered for the use of recombinant microorganisms up to the 40
m3 scale and has available a large flame-proof downstream processing area.
For companies looking for a site to start up or relocate their facilities,
the Pharma- and Chemical Park in Wuppertal offers tailored pharma-specific
prerequisites including grounds, laboratory and office space, access to FDA-approved
production plants and associated infrastructure.
Bayer HealthCare has thus positioned itself as a strong, versatile and experienced
partner for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
